Who Should Be The Next England Manager?

So after another shambolic tournament exit, Roy’s reign as England manager is over, and thoughts turn to who should replace him. Hodgson is clearly a decent man, but there is no doubt that Euro 2016 was a massive underachievement for England, compounded by a series of baffling substitutions (or lack thereof). There was no way he could continue in the job. So let’s take a look at the potential candidates to replace him. It is my belief that the next England manager should be English. In fact I believe that…

My diary of watching ALL of Euro 2016 (England-Iceland)

Follow @IJFootballBlogs Hello, my name is Ian and I’m going to be bringing you a brief blog each day of my match day goings on of trying to watch every Euro 2016 game. Round of 16 – England v Iceland. Well, what can I say. I’ll give you three words how I currently feel this morning after the England game last night – angry, annoyed, appalled. I thought about the word ‘shocked’ but knowing a fair bit about Iceland’s talents and ability I thought it would be wrong to use that…

My diary of watching ALL of Euro 2016 (Round of 16)

Follow @IJFootballBlogs Hello, my name is Ian and I’m going to be bringing you a brief blog each day of my match day goings on of trying to watch every Euro 2016 game. Round of 16. Woo hoo Euro 2016 and live ‘Round of 16’ football was back over the weekend and Monday. Two days with no football was quite strenuous. Even more so with all the goings on in Britain right now, the EU referendum taking all the headlines whilst the football wasn’t on. That’s politics though and I’m certainly…

The Knives are out – Wins the only way to blunt them

Look let’s be honest about it England have not been great at this year’s European Championships – adequate is how I would describe it. They couldn’t beat an awful Russia side, they then got a very late winner against a Wales side who were happy to dig in after taking a first half lead and then they could not break down an average Slovakia to concede top spot in their group. A lack of tactical nous by the manager, strange (or lack of substitutions) against the Russians and Slovakians, the managers selection policy especially…

My diary of watching ALL of Euro 2016 (Day 12)

Follow @IJFootballBlogs Hello, my name is Ian and I’m going to be bringing you a brief blog each day of my match day goings on of trying to watch every Euro 2016 game. Day 12. In my opinion we had the game of the tournament last night. I thought Croatia were outstanding, but both teams created plenty of chances which meant the game was end to end. Roy Hodgson has been criticised for ‘resting’ players and changing the team. However Croatia did a similar thing with Modric (their best player), Mandzukic,…

Follow @IJFootballBlogs Hello, my name is Ian and I’m going to be bringing you a brief blog each day of my match day goings on of trying to watch every Euro 2016 game. Day 11. No 2pm or 5pm kicks offs again yesterday, they’re now few and far between which means we’re getting to the business end of the tournament. Where teams are now either going home, staying for the next round or for some, staying and waiting to see if the results go their way to see if they…

Follow @IJFootballBlogs Hello, my name is Ian and I’m going to be bringing you a brief blog each day of my match day goings on of trying to watch every Euro 2016 game. Day 10. France and Switzerland finished first and second in Group A last night then, but an historic day for Albania. Not only did Sadiku head in Albania’s first ever major tournament goal to obviously give them their first ever major tournament win. They also beat Romania for the first time in 68 years. The singing, partying and of…

Rashford – If he is going to play – please use him properly!!!!!!!

Its the 73rd minute – England 1 Wales 1 in a their huge Group B clash in Lens. The English in the ascendancy looking for a winner. Wales digging in defending well and looking pretty comfortable. England’s manager, Roy Hodgson, has one more card to play and to his credit and my surprise he brings on Marcus Rashford, the young tyro from Manchester United, who only made his first team debut in February of this year.  Let me first explain, I don’t think Rashford should even be in the squad in my opinion Roy picked…

Thankfully no beer was drank last night and now I’m ready for my busiest day of trying to watch all the games…

Germany v Poland: The Stats That Matter

Poland earned a very creditable draw with Germany despite not registering a single shot on target! The world champions managed just 3 shots on target themselves as Poland kept them at arms length, a result which disappointed punters and football purists, but which represents a superb achievement for the Poles who now look set to qualify from the group. Graphic design student Ken Roberts has created this handy infographic which captures all the key stats from the match. Many thanks Ken for your contribution. The full version of the graphic…
