FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying

Hello, my name is Ian and after doing my (preview/review) blogs on this site covering all the games of Euro 2016. I decided to start a new project. To try to attend as many rounds of the FA Cup 2016/2017 season starting from the very beginning. I’ve gone more than well so far, having been to the Extra Preliminary Round, the Preliminary Round as well as the First, Second and Third Round Qualifying rounds. This round then was the Fourth and final Round of Qualifying and once again I decided to keep it local and go to a game in the Manchester/Greater Manchester area.

Unfortunately, but not in a bad way, there wasn’t that many local teams playing at home in the Manchester area in this round. The two closest grounds were two that were easy enough to get to, but two that I had been to before, Moss Lane for Altrincham and Edgeley Park for Stockport County. My only other option was potentially going down to Nantwich for their game. I was very tempted and if it wasn’t for other commitments I’d of definitely gone.

It wasn’t to be though so I opted for Altrincham again and their home time with Matlock Town from the Northern Premier top division. Since my last visit to Altrincham they have done a little better in the league too, but are still having an awful season and if they can’t take their FA Cup form into the league they could be looking at relegation again.

The actual game itself was a good game and with plenty of incidents and goals too. First of all there was quite a lot of poor defending all round on the day. Starting with Altrincham just not getting tight enough a couple of times to different players, which allowed Matlock a few unchallenged passes. Which lead to the ball being slotted into the back of the net by McManus, just after the half hour mark.

20161015_152523Alty equalised just five minutes later, again defenders weren’t tight enough, this time for Matlock. After a lofted flick into Damian Reeves, he controlled the ball brilliantly before swivelling quickly and half volleying the ball into the ground and into Matlock’s net. Goal of the game for me, just excellent awareness from the striker.

1-1 at half-time and although Altrincham were on top, Matlock deserved to still be in the game. Alty came out flying in the second half though and two goals from Miller within the first ten minutes pretty much sealed the game for Altrincham. They hung on to their lead to enter the first round proper of the competition once again. There was a late penalty miss for Matlock and a red card for Alty’s Hannigan which could have potentially changed the game, but it didn’t.

That’s six games for myself in the FA cup this year and every time the home team has won and gone through, five straight away on the day. Anyway, here are some highlights from Alty TV to see the action for yourself.

I was a little behind in getting this report out as you can see by the date, but in that time all the replays have taken place and even TV scheduling has been arranged. The full draw with dates and kick off times for the FA Cup First Round proper can be seen below:
