Thierry Henry cheats Ireland out of WC 2010
Wednesday, 18 November 2009
In amongst all the hand-wringing, conspiracy theories and heat-of-the-moment fury, one truth is unquestionable: tonight, Thierry Henry committed an outrageous act of cheating and got away with it.
I have no idea how long the video above will survive, but it shows Henry twice handling the ball to keep it in play and then "cross" it to William Gallas - himself offside from the original pass - to score the goal which sends France to World Cup 2010 and knocks Ireland out.
Twitter, as always, is abuzz with debate about the incident. How that can be, I don't know. The handball itself was as clear as day and no matter how many times I'm asked to name a professional who wouldn't do the same, or told that any professional would have done it, my opinion won't change.
Henry will rightly be subjected to a large amount of criticism. Yes, any professional might have done the same, but that doesn't excuse the fact that Henry did. In one moment, Thierry Henry has gone from being quite a popular player with an excellent reputation (not that I agreed with it, incidentally) to a common cheat. He is football's most unpopular man this evening.
Regarding Henry, I think it's a shame that such a brilliant player has soiled his legacy. Celebrating like a maniac hardly helped matters.
But for me this incident is made all the more interesting by the questions it raises. I have been vehemently against video technology in football for as long as I can remember. It would certainly have worked here, which puts me in a difficult spot. Even more likely is that UEFA's additional assistant referees (they're the fellas blocking the view of supporters behind the goals) would have spotted this handball.
The officials, of course, are getting much of the stick tonight but they simply got conned. The referee had no view at all of Henry's basketball skills and his assistant was a couple of yards behind play because he was busy not seeing Gallas being offside. Players have to take responsibility for cheating as much as referees do for spotting it.
Overall, it's a real shame. I've had my say somewhat more forcefully elsewhere. What say you?
UPDATE: The video has, predictably, been removed from YouTube. But you've all seen it anyway, right?

Bloody idiot CHEAT, bloody SHAMEFUL. i dont think he even dares watch the replay!
so wat ...henry did wat he can..........even maradona did it
Sorry that the Republic of Ireland got knocked out in the manner that they were. Only one team desereved to go through tonight and it wasn't Frogs. Only wish Roy Keane had still been playing.
Even if Ireland had lost it would still have been fitting to see Henry leaving the pitch with two broken legs!
Shades of Maradonna '86. Lesson to kids - Cheats prosper!
Time for video technology long overdue. Cite Henry. Kick France out of World Cup. Buy ref and linesman licence for guide dog!

Seems to be a french thing, spend years making themselves truly great players and then in a moment react poorly or blatantly cheat and sully their reputation. I think Henry goes to ground too easy and just continued to show his gamesmanship (read cheating) today.
Let France have their cheap victory. We have our pride. Hugh
I HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED HENRY AS A FOOTBALLER. NOT ANYMORE. HE IS A SHAME TO HIS COUNTRY, THAT MAN WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN BY THE IRISH. A PRICK IS WHAT HE IS. THEIFING HENRY
No French fan, but maybe Ireland out to think about scoring more than just 1 goal in the two games ...
that's "ought" not "out" - duh
Oh Chris, I just don't know what to say.
First off, they were offside before the ball was played, then Henry handled the ball to keep it in play.
Ireland should have won this game, there is no doubt about that, the French were ratteled, and they had a chance to win the game and they did it....by cheating.
I just hope Sepp Blatter & FIFA are happy, you got what you wanted, France in the World Cup finals.
It is a shame what happened today. Ireland deserved to qualify. I am an Arsenal man, but today I loose respect for T.H. He is a professional footballer and the captain of his national team, he should not condone actions like this!! In short, Henry eat a dick, you cheat!!!
There is no e-mail address on the French Football Federation website but I just sent a mail to [email protected] which did not get bounced back. An opportunity for all Irishmen and fair minded football fans to make their voice heard at cheating headqurters !!
The goal was offside before Henry handled it twice. The Linesman bottled the decision both times. Henry is someone people looked up to but not anymore. He should be banned and so should the linesman who saw it perfectly. FIFA have nothing about the hand ball on their website and constantly talk about and promote Fairplay. Hypocrites! Boycott all Henry Sponsors. He is moving from Nike to Reebok and no more Gillette products.
Surely this game has to be replayed, there is too much at stake for it just to be brushed off.
FAX number for FIFA! +41-43-222 7878
But I would like to point out that anyone that can read French will see that respect to the French people for their reaction of disgust to Henry's actions, so for the people that France I hope that they go on to do well in the World Cup! I had a look at this link below that has some good football related Facebook Statuses for the World Cup in its Facebook Status Generator:

Fair Play must shine through and FIFA have got a big message to send out now by banning Henry from the World Cup
