Aragones' triumphant Semih
Wednesday, 6 August 2008
Excuse the frankly vomit-inducing headline. And not in a good way.
This evening I had the pleasure of watching the UEFA Champions League Second Qualifying Round Second Leg between MTK of Hungary and Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
2-0 up from the first leg, Luis Aragones' charges swept MTK aside in Budapest, picking up an impressive 5-0 away win.
They weren't, for the most part, even that good. Alex and Roberto Carlos did alright, along with a few others. That includes TFT favourite the mighty Colin Kazim-Richards.
But one man stole the show.
Following three memorable goals in Turkey's stunning run at Euro 2008, 25-year-old attacker Semih Senturk went some way this evening to showing the rest of us what Turkish supporters have probably known for years: he's no flash in the pan.
In a deadly display of finishing, Semih smashed in a mouthwatering quadruple for Fenerbahce.
The first came within five minutes of the start. Shambolic defending from the Hungarians left Semih six yards out with a perfect opportunity to show that he's just that little bit quicker in the head than everyone else on the pitch. Left-footed, he blasted his shot into the roof of the net.
A good way through the second half, he grabbed his second. And what a goal it was. He received the ball on the edge of the box and, without looking up, turned inside a man and floated a beautiful chip over the goalkeeper and into the side-netting inside the far post. Simply brilliant.
Fenerbahce's third came from the penalty spot. English referee Martin Atkinson gave the kick after a clear handball and, strangely it seemed, Semih did not take the chance. Emre tucked in the spot kick to turn the night into an embarrassment for MTK.
Back to Semih, then, and his third came from another quick turn and shot on the edge of the box - he just appears to be a split-second ahead of everyone else. And number four was a cushioned back post header. Job done.
A wonderful attacking performance from a superb player. Shame so few will have seen it.
