Introducing Global Futbol Initiative

The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed a linked logo over there on the left between Drew Carey and the FSF banner. That logo belongs to Global Futbol Initiative (GFI), a charity which got in touch with me a couple of months ago. You'll like.

The premise is a simple one: to donate footballs to children living in poverty all over the world. I can relate to GFI's approach because I believe that football is a great bringer of joy, and although these are areas with bigger concerns, every kid whose life is improved even a little by a football is a small victory over adversity.

Here's GFI's objective (and here's their website):

"We believe that futbol is more than just a sport. It is an international language, a universally shared passion, and a component of character development. We firmly believe that promoting and nurturing the sport can lead to positive advancements and create meaningful connections that will help make the world a more peaceful and reciprocal place."

Through a network of volunteers, GFI is currently working in Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Palestine, Peru, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad, and Zambia. Its target is to have a presence in every impoverished region by the 2014 World Cup.
